12th Mar, 2019:-
The Department of Nephrology at
PGIMER, Chandigarh is celebrating the World Kidney Day, a global event to
raise awareness about kidney disease and its risk factors. It is
celebrated on second Thursday of March every year. The theme for 2019 is ‘Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere’,
a theme which proposes to have universal health coverage of kidney diseases.
850 million people worldwide are now
estimated to have kidney diseases from various causes. Chronic kidney disease
(CKD) causes at least 2.4 million deaths per year and is now the 6th fastest
growing cause of death. The theme highlights the growing burden of
kidney disease and kidney health disparity and inequity worldwide. Chronic
Kidney Disease is likely to be the 5th leading cause of Years of Life Lost by
2040. To tackle this issue, the Nephrology community plans
to undertake several advocacy activities. The Department
liaisons with the relevant stakeholders or indirectly through
informal and formal professional networks. On the occasion
of WKD, the Department is organising to screening camp
and multimedia awareness activities.
A screening camp for screening
of individuals for presence of kidney disease and its risk
factors will be held in the New OPD complex on Ground Floor in the
Physiotherapy section. An integrated approach with presence of
doctors, dietician and lab personnel for doing tests under same
roof for convenience of patients will be used. Last year’s camp was also a
great success with >700 patients/subjects coming voluntarily to attend it.
This year the Department is also organising a voluntary blood donation camp.
